I get away with doing very little I don't like. I have a son who is a wonder in every way. I have friends who are faithful, and challenge me endlessly to be better. I have a job that is pretty much amazing. We write off things like makeup and bobby pins on our taxes. How cool is that?

These two...
It is not easy at 5 AM to look at two faces and pinpoint the exact succession of words I should use to describe our time with them. This is especially true in this case for so many reasons, including the fact that this shoot happened about a month ago.

Being gone for a week can, and usually does cause the weary traveler to declare "I need a vacation from my vacation." We tried so hard to keep work at home, and we were successful most days. The only problem is that a to-do list deferred maketh the mind a bit overwhelmed. Fortunately, working these two friendly faces into a blog post was task #1.

We can say so much for weddings, as we have many of them this fall. We love big budgets, silk gowns, and smiles for days. We enjoy people; family and friends who fill up every pixel of a captured moment. Patterned and busy, in this age of pinterest we all work so hard to create a theme that drips down walls, and spills over tables. Weddings are about the bride and groom (and we try so hard as photographers to make it that way), but they are also about everyone else. The men, maids, relatives, and friends; it is about those who came before, but also the ones who come later. "This was my wedding." What an honor it is to curate those memories.

Augusta GA Wedding Photographer: Steven and Stephanie
And they are off... husband and wife, on their way to Cancun or some other exotic destination. Putting a wedding together is such a journey, and for most the research, crafting, and prepping is so much that inevitably at some point during the day a bride and groom long for this moment of completion.
And one would think that on this day when the rain was almost relentless, Stephanie and Steven would be no exception. We started at 9:00am at a friend's house, and despite the deluge I never heard a negative word from Stephanie's mouth. Today she was not longing for the resolution, but she was going to enjoy every minute until the last second passed.
So here are Steven and Stephanie, and their party of twenty. Enjoy these images as these two partied all day long.

Nearly a month ago, Patrick and I returned "home" to Charleston to photograph this lovely friend. And yesterday, she walked down the aisle at last.
Stephanie and her small entourage tromped all over the city in two unseasonably cool days. We got in and out of cars more times than I can count, and In the end there were very tired feet, thousands of wrinkles, and so many memories.

I have a Saturday morning routine. After waking up and having breakfast (oatmeal with fresh cherries and maple syrup these days), I take a moment to think. I think about my day, and how it might be pretty normal. I think of how I will drive to work, cut some hair, and eat a lunch fresh from the microwave. After work I might head to the gym, or give up and go home to comfy pants, a husband and a cuddle bug. We would talk a bit, watch some TV, and... well- you get the picture.
And then, over the same breakfast I think about how for some girls, this Saturday will be anything but mundane.

Today is a special day. Monumental, if you will.
Patrick and I met nearly 10 years ago at a coffee shop on Calhoun Street in Charleston, SC. He would be my manager, and later my boyfriend, fiance, and finally my husband.
Although I laid down my coffee shop apron years ago, he has continued to wear it; sometimes with joy, and other times with disdain. In more recent times, as we have seen undeniable success behind the camera, the smell of coffee on his clothes has become a complete nuisance.

Remember this girl?
If you don't, she is our friend, Karla, and don't I wish I had a photo of her sweet husband, and especially their kids. I am afraid you will have to trust us: they would not leave Norman Rockwell in want.
Over the last two years, this family has had it's gaze set on the other side of the world, where two children have captured their hearts. This family has fundraised endlessly for the adoption of these littles, and now are on the home stretch of their endeavor to bring them home.

So, if you have been following us for any amount of time, you know that we absolutely love photographing women. When Patrick and I work with women, we work in tandem. I do hair and makeup: I bouf, I djuje (sound it out, people, it's a word;), conceal, enhance, blot, smudge, and the like. Patrick poses, adjusts, contemplates, adjusts again, shoots, and then goes home and edits until way after the sun goes down. We completely love what we do, but we have come across one major issue that continually wrinkles our brain.
Wardrobe.

Craft and Connection: glamour photography in augusta ga
I love this video. I myself have struggled to fall into the traditional expectations others had prepared for me, and perhaps that is why I identify so much with this perspective. Dove is a champion for individuality, and this video is a (forgive me) proverbial middle finger to the established thought of what beauty really means.
Secondly, this video adds validity to some extent to what Rachel and I are trying to accomplish with this little business of ours. This week I started physical therapy for a shoulder injury, and as my therapist and I were connecting with each other, I divulged my career choice. As par for the course, she has a family connection to a photographer. As I discussed what Rachel and I do and our style, it came out that this photographer (in her words) uses photoshop to take "a 3 and make her a 10. I can't even believe it is the same girl afterwards." Now, it is not my position to cast ill upon another photographer for their choice in style; but I cannot help but believe that this perception of pretty is skewed, at best.
And then I came upon this video today.
Believe me, I am in no way trying to say that I am yet as influential or as talented as Bert Stern (neither am I as mentally unique). However in seeing this trailer, as well as these absolutely iconic images sans any photoshop manipulation; it reminds me of the power of the connection between the photographer and the subject. When thought, practice, connection, and execution are used, photoshop is not an absolute.
So before I let myself go too long on the subject, I will leave the reader with this: it is our dedication to craft and our connection to you during that photo shoot that we desire. We intend to create lasting, emotional images not only for us or the subject; but also for her daughters, sons, and even their children. It never has, and never will be about the photoshop action afterwards. Guaranteed.
